How to Style Throw Pillows Like an Interior Designer

How to Style Throw Pillows Like an Interior Designer

The difference between a sofa that looks styled and one that looks like an afterthought is almost always the pillows. Here's how designers actually do it.

The Odd Number Rule

Always use an odd number — 3 or 5 pillows on a standard sofa, never 4. Odd numbers feel dynamic. Even numbers feel rigid.

The Three-Layer Formula

Layer 1 — Anchor: Two large matching pillows (60x60cm) at each end. These set your base colour — neutral works best. Linen or cotton.

Layer 2 — Contrast: One or two medium pillows (45x45cm) in a pattern or contrasting texture. This is where your Ankara print or geometric design lives.

Layer 3 — Accent: One small rectangular or bolster pillow in the centre. Bold colour or interesting fabric — faux fur, silk, denim.

Colour Without Chaos

Pick a base neutral (cream, warm grey, terracotta). Pull one accent colour from your rug or curtains. Limit yourself to three colours total across all pillows.

What to Avoid

  • All pillows the same size — boring and flat
  • Too many patterns competing — pick one patterned piece per layer
  • Pillows so stiff they look untouched — give them a slight karate-chop indent at the top for that lived-in luxury look

The Nigerian Living Room Context

Most Lagos living rooms have bold statement sofas — deep burgundy, royal blue, dark green. Pair these with warm cream and camel pillows to balance rather than compete.
