Buying a pillow in Lagos is not the same as buying one in London. Humidity, heat, and harmattan dust all affect which fabrics perform well and which deteriorate fast.
Best Fabrics for Lagos
Cotton — The clear winner. Breathable, absorbs moisture without holding it, washes easily, holds colour well. Works year-round.
Linen — Second best. Gets softer with each wash, resists dust mites naturally, performs excellently in humid conditions. Slightly more expensive but lasts longer.
Polyester blend — Great for decorative pillows that won't be touched often. Resistant to moisture and fading. Easy to wipe down. Not ideal for pillows used daily.
Fabrics to Be Careful With
Silk — Beautiful but high-maintenance in Lagos humidity. Keep silk pillows out of direct sunlight and away from AC vents. Reserve for air-conditioned bedrooms only.
Faux Fur — Excellent in harmattan season (October–February) when air is dry. In rainy season (April–October), faux fur can trap moisture and develop odour if not aired properly.
Velvet — Traps dust aggressively in harmattan. Requires more frequent care in Lagos than in temperate climates.
Fabric Care in Nigerian Conditions
- Air pillows in indirect sunlight monthly — not direct sun, which fades fabric and degrades filling
- During rainy season, keep decorative pillows away from open windows
- Wash covers every 2–3 months, not just when visibly dirty
